The Spring Festival or the Hundred Flowers Festival is celebrated in early April wherein citizens pay tribute to the Mother Nature. The general belief is that Mother Nature symbolises fertility and people often decorate their gardens, doors, and front porches with flowers and show their gratitude to the God for giving birth to the season. There is much custom and tradition behind this particular festival. Local people put platters of special coloured flowers on each table and bow down before Goddesses that are believed to have been made by the Gods.

 

The Autumn Festival is also celebrated in April. It is traditionally a time for farming and gathering before the cold weather sets in. In Chinese traditionalism, there is a story that says Buddha was born when the waters of a pond on the Yellow River boiled. Legend says that the waters dried up and turned into a pearl, symbolising Buddha's enlightenment. Farmers will still gather to celebrate this festival in April. They will gather outside the house where the last grain of rice has been stored until the summer.

 

On the first day of the Chinese New Year, people will start getting New Year's greetings from relatives and friends. It is traditional to wash and clean the house, hang bamboo fans over the window, and cook yucca soup. It is also believed that the sound of water trickling over rocks and down mountains heralds the start of a new year. At home, people hang curtains, put lit candles in small containers, and pay tribute to the Goddess of water and fortune by asking for good crops, healthy livestock, and abundance.

 

The Goddess of wealth holds special significance during Chinese New Year. The Chinese believe that if they wish to gain wealth, they must look to the Goddess for help. On this day, people offer money to the Goddess. They say that the money which the Goddess bestows will be used to help the poor and the disadvantaged. Chinese people place bet upon horses at this time and ask the Goddess to help them win. The horse races are considered important events in Chinese culture.

 

In addition to the major ceremonies there are small, unique festivals occurring throughout the Chinese New Year. These festivals are filled with fun and excitement for children and adults alike. Some of these include: the Spring Festival, the Orange Spring Festival, the Fanciful Spring Festival, and the Chinese New Year's Festival. In addition, there are also many cultural displays, such as acupuncture and Tuina, food ceremonies, fire ceremonies, and herbal festivals.
